Punjab Education Replaces Practical Exams With New Assessment System

Punjab Education Replaces Practical Exams With New Assessment System

Lahore: Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat has unveiled a comprehensive package of examination reforms aimed at promoting transparency, improving fairness, and curbing malpractice in the province’s education system.

Speaking at a press briefing, the minister said that after successfully controlling large-scale cheating during first-year examinations, the government is now focused on strengthening the overall assessment framework.

Under the new policy, traditional practical exams will be replaced with multiple-choice questions (MCQs) beginning this academic year. The minister explained that the change is intended to make assessments more uniform, data-driven, and transparent.

To ensure accountability, the government also plans to introduce a constitutional amendment allowing the rechecking of answer sheets  a move long demanded by students. However, Rana Sikandar clarified that a higher rechecking fee will be charged, citing the large number of applicants expected to request re-evaluation.

The minister further announced a shift toward concept-based learning, ensuring that exam questions test students’ understanding rather than rote memorization.

In a bid to improve exam management, invigilators’ daily allowance has been increased to Rs. 5,000, and only those who complete mandatory training will be authorized to supervise examinations. This measure aims to raise professional standards and minimize irregularities during testing.

Rana Sikandar also revealed that university teaching assistants will now be permitted to support exam processes, while both public and private sector organizations will be engaged to help implement the reforms effectively across Punjab.

“These steps are part of our broader vision to restore credibility, ensure fairness, and modernize the examination system,” the minister concluded.
