The recent death of Ibrahim, who fell into an open manhole in Karachi’s Gulshan-i-Iqbal area, has sparked widespread outrage and highlighted the city’s crippling infrastructure issues. Ibrahim’s tragic demise is not an isolated incident, it’s a grim reminder that atleast 22 people have lost their lives in Karachi this year alone due to open manholes and gutters. The incident has sparked a heated debate about the city’s infrastructure and the authorities’ response to such crises.
The Incident:
Ibrahim’s family who had come to the area for shopping, is still grappling with the tragedy. His father, Nabeel, recounted the heart-wrenching moment he saw his child fall into the manhole. “I was shopping with my wife, and Ibrahim was with us. He suddenly ran ahead and fell into the manhole,”he said. The incident has left left the family and the community in shock, demanding justice and accountability.
The incident has also raised questions about the safety measures in place to prevent such tragedies. The manhole was located in a busy area, and it’s unclear how it remained uncovered. The authorities’ negligence has been widely criticised, with many calling for action against those responsible.

A Pattern of Negligence:
The incident has sparked protests, with citizens demanding accountability and justice for Ibrahim’s family. Celebrities, politicians, and civil society members have also voiced their anger, questioning the authorities’ negligence and apathy. The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation(KMC)has attributed the incident to the “carelessness” of officials from the Bus Rapid Transit(BRT)service and a nearby department store.
The KMC report revealed that the BRT construction has severely damaged the drainage system, and the manhole’s cover was left open, creating a deadly trap. The incident has highlighted the city’s infrastructure issues, with many areas having open manholes and gutters. The authorities’ failure to address these issues has led to this tragedy.
Investigation and Response:
Local Government Minister, Nasir Hussain Shah has announced an investigation and assured that those responsible will be held accountable. However, many are skeptical, given the city’s history of similar incidents. The investigation will determine the cause of the incident and identify those responsible.
The authorities have also announced plans to cover open manholes and gutters in the city. However, many are questioning the effectiveness of these measures, given the city’s past experiences. The incident has highlighted the need for a more robust system to ensure citizen’s safety.

Alarming Statistics:
The statistics are alarming:37 sewer fall incidents are reported annually in Karachi’s emergency departments, with 95% of fatalities being children. The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation(KWSC)has allocated Rs 180 million for manhole maintenance, but the lack of effective implementation remains a concern.
The incident has highlighted the need for urgent action to address Karachi’s infrastructure issues. The authorities must prioritize citizen’s safety and well-being, ensuring that such tragedies are prevented in the future. The city mourns Ibrahim’s loss and it’s time for the authorities to take concrete steps towards reforming Karachi’s infrastructure.
