Iran and Turkey Launch Major Joint Rail Project to Reconnect Asia and Europe
Iran and Turkey have announced a major new step in strengthening regional trade, economic cooperation, and connectivity. Both countries have agreed to begin construction of a new joint railway line that aims to serve as an important gateway between Asia and Europe. The announcement was made by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Sunday, marking what many analysts view as a significant development for regional transportation networks.
The new railway, known in Iran as the Marand–Cheshmeh Soraya transit line, will extend toward Turkey’s Aralik border region. The route will cover nearly 200 kilometres (about 120 miles) and is being designed as a modern, high-capacity corridor that can support large volumes of cargo. According to Iranian authorities, the project is expected to cost around $1.6 billion and will take approximately three to four years to complete once work begins.
A New Link in a Historic Trade Route
This railway is much more than just a transport line. It is part of a broader vision to revive and modernise ancient trade routes. For centuries, merchants and travellers moved between East Asia, the Middle East, and Europe using what came to be known as the Silk Road. These routes carried not only goods but also cultures, ideas, and knowledge across continents. Today, many countries, including Iran and Turkey, are trying to rebuild those economic connections in a modern form.
Earlier this month, Iran’s Minister of Transport, Farzaneh Sadegh, said the upcoming rail link would transform the southern section of the old Silk Road into a fully connected “all-rail corridor.” She explained that this new connection would help ensure uninterrupted railway movement between China and Europe, two of the world’s largest economic regions.
Sadegh also highlighted the practical benefits. The new line would provide fast and cost-effective transport for all types of cargo, with minimal delays along its route. This means goods could move between Asia, Iran, Turkey, and Europe much more efficiently than they do now. Lower costs and quicker delivery could attract many international companies seeking reliable trade routes.
A Step Toward Stronger Iran–Turkey Relations
Relations between Iran and Turkey have long been influenced by regional politics, trade interests, and shared borders. The latest agreement shows both countries want to deepen economic cooperation and reduce barriers that restrict commerce.
During a joint press conference on Saturday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan emphasised the need to make trade easier between the two neighbours. Araghchi said both sides stressed the importance of removing obstacles that block investment and economic growth.
He added that both countries recognise the strategic value of the new rail project. They expressed hope that the construction process can begin “as soon as possible.” For Iran and Turkey, the railway is not only a transportation project but also a symbol of improving relations and long-term cooperation.
A Boost for Iran’s Economy
Iran has been struggling economically due to decades of international sanctions that have made trade, investment, and industrial development difficult. In recent years, Iranian leaders have been looking for ways to improve economic resilience by strengthening ties with neighbouring countries.
Projects like this new railway offer Iran an opportunity to open fresh trade routes, increase exports, and become a transit hub between East and West. By connecting directly with Turkey, Iran can offer Asian economies especially China a faster and more stable passage toward European markets.
This strategy also aligns well with China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), launched in 2013. The BRI often referred to as the “New Silk Road” aims to build highways, ports, and railway networks across continents to support global trade. The Iran–Turkey rail project fits naturally into that vision, potentially becoming part of a larger network stretching from East Asia to Western Europe.
